Man crushed as fork lift overturns. January 2008

A Northampton man has been crushed to death by a forklift truck in an horrific accident. The man, aged 28, died when the fork arm of the nine tonne truck toppled onto a car.

The man, who was the front-seat passenger in the car, died at the scene of the accident at the Cherwell Gate housing development in Broughton Road, Banbury, on Friday 18th January.

The driver of the car sustained minor injuries while a rear seat passenger suffered head injuries, which are serious but not thought to be life threatening.

It is understood the accident happened after the car had driven on to a building site. It was waiting for the truck to finish manoeuvering when it toppled on its side and on to the car. Police, fire and ambulance crews all attended, with the man confirmed dead at the scene.

The Health and Safety Executive has started an inquiry into the tragedy at the development.
